Traffic Circle Chaos

7 Apr

I haven’t updated in a while-I know, bad blogger- but a lot of new things have been happening lately!

Last year, and then for most of the season this year, I had been throwing shot put, and discus. After a lot of throwing, and no progress, mixed with my own dislike for the sport, I decided to give running track a try. I like running on my own, how bad could it be? I told the coaches I wanted to do distance, not sprint running, and shortly after, I was running with the group.

Last Monday, we were doing a group 3 mile run, and I was about 1/2 mile from the end. There were a few people behind me, and people in front of me, but we were all pretty spread out, so there was no one actually around me for most of the run. There is a ton of construction going on around my school, and they just put in a traffic circle. I was starting to zone out, and was just focused on finishing the race, when all of a sudden i hit the pavement- hard.  I had tripped over the uneven pavement between the circle, and the road, and took a nasty spill. My hands were torn up, and my ankle was a little twisted, but the worst part was my legs. I’ve never been so torn up in my life! I fought tears, as I picked myself up, and walked for about 20 feet before starting to run again. I had to finish the run!

After I stopped running, all the pain in my legs hit me. They didn’t have any bandages in the field house, so i went ahead and left to go home, and fox myself up.

My right knee was a pretty raised knot with bruising all over, and the left knee was a deep wound. Believe it or not, I actually ran in the track meet two days later in the 800, and mile events. Ouch!

I’ve had bandages on them the last few days, and they’re just starting to heal up a little bit. I’m hoping they’ll be better in the next few weeks before summer, so I can wear shorts and dresses/skirts without feeling ridiculous.  Yikes!

Winter Weather Running

22 Dec

A little known fact is that I LOVE running in cold weather. I’m not sure why exactly, but something about the cold air is exhilarating, and makes me run a lot faster and have better form than in the summer time. It may be due to the humidity and heat, but summer running always makes me feel so slow and lethargic.

I think I owe a lot of credit for winter running to my little brother Ben. We’ve done a lot  of running together lately, and he has really pushed me to be a better runner. His running abilities are really impressive for his age. He’s 9 (!) and he’s run multiple 5ks, and placed in a few.

The headband I wearing above is really cool too. I found it at Target for $10, and it does  a great job at staying on, which I usually have problems with. It keeps my ears nice and warm too!

My latest 5k was a Reindeer Run in Maryville, TN where I was visiting family. It was my fastest time yet, but it wasn’t pretty. The weather was surprisingly warm for December, and I was not prepared for that. I wore running pants, and thank goodness i wore a t-shirt, otherwise it would have been unbearable. After the race, I felt shaky and like I was having low blood sugar. It was pretty bad. The rest of the race was so organized, but the refreshments, and water afterward was extremely chaotic.

I’m glad I live in a place where the winters are mild enough to be able to run!

Merry Christmas!

Drawback of a Long Weekend

11 Nov

Now, don’t get me wrong. I LOVE having long weekends, but they do have a drawback. Example:

  • Increased homework

Septemberfood 112

I mean, who doesn’t like having 5 worksheets and a paper to do over the weekend? I wouldn’t be so irritated at having this homework, if it weren’t that our teacher said we would only have ONE worksheet for homework the day before, and then decided we should have all of this on top. And the fact that it’s just for one class. Biology will be the death of me.

Lunch today was super simple, and was more of a filling snack than a meal. I’ve found a new love in Edamame! I eat them all the time at school, and they’re a great source of protein too!

My family and I are going to an ASU game tomorrow! It’s going to be freeeeeeezing! Yikes!

No More Lazy Half-Days

10 Nov

My school district had a half day of school today, so my friend Sierra and I decided to have a little fun after school. I always get bored on these days, because you go home, and there’s not much to do! Here are some photos of the fun that ensued!

afterrr (Sierra and I with our friend Alex)

Just a tiny little sample 🙂 We have tomorrow and Friday off as well, so I’m looking forward to making the most out of my little mini-break! Tomorrow I have plans to go see Footloose again for the second time in less than one week. Yes, it’s that good! I know it’s had mixed reviews, but I REALLY enjoyed it!

Have a good rest of the week and weekend! 🙂

Have you seen the new Footloose? What did you think of it compared to the original?

Family Runs

8 Oct

Whew! This morning, my dad and I decided to go for a little run around the neighborhood. It went well, and we finished pretty quickly. I love working out with my dad because we can motivate each other, and it helps that we live together, just incase one of us needs a little more motivating than the other 😉

Since I haven’t posted in a while, I thought I would update you all on some of my favorite new things!

POMx Antioxidant Super Tea

Septemberfood 094

Holy Ravioli. This stuff is the bomb. I picked some up  at the grocery store the other day, just because I thought it sounded pretty cool, and LOVED it! I got the Pomegranate Peach flavor, and would definitely recommend it.

A few weeks ago, I picked up this new purse at Target. I got it super cheap because it was on clearance. It has huge pockets on the sides as well as a huge interior which makes it perfect  for hauling all of my junk 🙂 I also really like the color, even though I’ve never really been a huge fan of yellow!

Septemberfood 093Lastly, I’ve really liked getting back into packing my lunches. I got a lot of ideas for lunches from Mama Pea’s list of lunches, although I haven’t really stuck to making them. Sometimes it’s easier to just put a nut butter on a sandwich thin and add some apple slices and call it a meal. I’m working on it though!

It also helps that I put my sandwiches in the cutest little container. (Seriously, how cute is that?!)

Septemberfood 095

Pack it in the bag, and I’m off to school.

It’s been a crazy last month. With almost no free time, I’m definitely having to change the way I do things. I’m not going to lie, it’s been pretty difficult for me to keep eating the things I’m use to. Sometimes healthy is not always the fastest option, and when I’m strapped for time, the fastest option usually wins. Tennis is almost over though, and after that, you’ll be seeing more of me around here, and more of the healthy foods I love!

Road trip to Asheville!

4 Sep

This morning started out with a simple smoothie made by my wonderful Magic Bullet:

  • frozen strawberries, mango, pineapple, and peaches
  • 1 scoop Vanilla protein powder
  • milk
  • Strawberry yogurt

Septemberfood 062

Asheville is only about an hour from where I live, so it makes a great day trip getaway! There aren’t really any health food stores near me, so when I want to get some of the healthy staples, I usually have to make a trip to a bigger area. I LOVE Asheville. The atmosphere, the vibe, the culture, the FOOD, everything.

For the trip I brought some almonds (these are DEFINITELY not my favorites. bleh) to snack on on the way.

Septemberfood 063

It really is such a beautiful drive. I love to look at the mountains.

Septemberfood 082 Septemberfood 084

I found the cutest little restaurant online called Nine Mile, where we ate lunch. It was really neat inside, with a great hippie vibe.

Septemberfood 073

I ordered the Raz Roots Vegetarian Chili, and a raspberry naturally brewed soda on the side. It was SO delicious!

Septemberfood 071

The first stop on our grocery store tour was Earth Fare.

Septemberfood 074

The only thing I bought here was some nutritional yeast. Then we were off to Greenlife Grocery, which is owned by Whole Foods.

Next stop was Target to get a couple other items. While we were there we ran into this. Seriously?!?

Septemberfood 076

Last Stop was to go into Downtown Asheville, and stop by a few of the more, ahem, alternative stores 🙂 The diversity in Asheville is probably my favorite part of the city. LOVE. We went into a frozen yogurt place and got a little treat before heading out.

Septemberfood 077 Septemberfood 078

I got the Strawberry flavor mixed with the Lychee yogurt. I topped it with some strawberries, kiwi, brownie bits, and Oreo crumbs. mmm!

It was a wonderful trip, and it was a great time spent with my family. Perfect getaway for this long weekend, and because of this:

Septemberfood 091I consider the trip a success! 🙂

Blogging in High School

1 Sep

Is hard. I have been so busy lately, I’ve had almost no time to blog, or read any of my favorites! With tennis matches and practices, homework, and all of the other things that go along with school starting, I have been so out of it; which is probably pretty apparent by my recent posts (or lack thereof).  Once my schedule starts evening out, I hope to be able to have more time for blogging.

Algebra II is kicking my bootie! I may have mentioned it before, but my schedule this semester is tough, but it’s not going to be nearly as hard as next semester.  Next semester, I have World History, AP Biology, English, and Pre-Cal! Whew! Next semester I will probably have no social life at all! ugh, oh well. If I can get some of these classes out of the way now, it should make my schedule easier in the next couple of years.

Tomorrow’s Friday(!), and in honor of that, I will share my song of the week, which just happens to be EXTREMELY appropriate (minus the drinking part 😉 )
